The ECDC had the privilege of taking part in the unveiling of a new information sign at Mazeppa Bay Hotel. This landmark captures the origins of this beautiful Wild Coast destination’s name, tracing it back to the schooner Mazeppa and the legendary Ukrainian leader, Ivan Mazeppa, whose life inspired poets, writers, and artists across the world. The information sign is more than a piece of history, it is a reminder of the deep cultural ties between South Africa and Ukraine, and a celebration of Mazeppa Bay as a site of heritage, tourism, and community pride.
Representing the ECDC, Regional Manager for Buffalo City and Amathole, Rufus Nayo, reflected: “It is an honour for the ECDC to be part of this rich history. More than owning properties like this one, our role extends to Enterprise Finance and Business Support, financing MSMEs, cooperatives, and individuals, including farmers and small-scale enterprises. The vegetables and meat served at this hotel should come from you, the community. You have the responsibility to ensure that the local economy circulates within your community.”
Echoing this call to action, Hotel Operator, Judy Jennings added: “It is our dream to restore Mazeppa Bay to its former glory and create jobs for local people. For that to happen, we need the community to partner with us in making this a safe and welcoming destination for tourists. I welcome every partnership and every hand of support to help make Mazeppa a success.”
With its iconic suspension bridge, breathtaking coastline, and layered history, Mazeppa Bay remains one of the jewels in the ECDC’s leisure property portfolio. Through partnerships and community driven initiatives, this legacy site is poised not only to preserve its history but also to build a sustainable and inclusive future for the Wild Coast.
