EMPOWERING LOCAL TALENT AND BUSINESS THROUGH FILM

One of the memorable productions produced in the province is Gqeberha: The Empire, the first telenovela in the province to grace our screens for two consecutive seasons. In January 2025, its run came to an end, after captivating audiences with its compelling storytelling. It also made a significant impact on the Eastern Cape’s film and television industries. From creating job opportunities to empowering local talent and businesses, Gqeberha: The Empire has left a lasting legacy.

The ECDC invested an additional R4 million in the second season of the popular telenovela, Gqeberha: The Empire following the success of season 1. The production created 640 jobs and contracted 110 small businesses.

The ECDC’s funding specifically incentivised the hiring of local heads of departments, actors, and the inclusion of Eastern Cape-based MSMEs in the production value chain.
