A Tribute to a Development Pioneer and Consummate Professional, Phakamisa George

09 October 2023

- A development pioneer popular within and outside of the ECDC, Mr George was a fine gentleman and professional who made an immeasurable contribution to the development of the Eastern Cape. The early years of his ECDC career were spent in the risk capital function, which he proudly referred to as “the investment hatchery and pipeline for ECDC.”

In this role, he distinguished himself, playing a leading role in the development of innovative projects such as the Giant Flag in the Valley of Desolation in Graaff Reinet - development of a bamboo industry, essential oil projects and the development of the berry corridor among others. Phaki, as he was commonly known, was instrumental in leading interest in investment into the dietary fibre project.

More recently, he led the ECDC trade and investment function, where he distinguished himself and made a discernible impact and contribution. In a limited period, he demonstrated an acute understanding of the trade and investment ecosystem, playing a crucial role in the coordination of the 2022 Eastern Cape Investment Conference whereat R46 billion worth of investments was announced.

His ability to nurture stakeholder relationships was equally remarkable. Radebe was well-loved and was an affable companion. ECDC colleagues will miss his legendary story-telling and contagious laughter even during difficult times.

We will remember his never die attitude and his incredible work ethic. Radebe never shied away from a task and was always available to lend a helping hand.

Our thoughts are with the family during this difficult period, praying for strength and comfort.

John 11:25-26 - Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

Issued by the ECDC CEO, Mr Ayanda Wakaba
