Minerals
Minerals
The Eastern Cape has few mineral deposits, but there are opportunities in the Coega Industrial Development Zone for metal production and processing of imported or South African ores. The feasibility of opportunities to develop titanium, coal and ceramic production are currently being investigated. Construction can be a significant industry.
SOME OPPORTUNITIES
- Clay: Small deposits of high quality clay in the Transkei, eg Port St Johns, for extraction.
- Coal: Feasibility of coal mining at Indwe/Molteno, upgrading coal quality and uses in industries in the province, including brick making, ceramics and metal production.
- Construction material: Brick making, cement manufacture and aggregate for roads and construction.
- Diamonds: Possibility of alluvial diamonds in the Orange River and kimberlite pipes in Maluti.
- Electrolytic manganese dioxide: Feasibility of EMD production at Coega IDZ from manganese ore transported from Northern Cape.
- Glass beads: A small industry has been established to make beads from recycled glass.
- Jewellery: Assessment of skills in the province.
- Kaolin: Feasibility of processing Grahamstown deposits for ceramics, pottery and bone china. Feasibility of bone ash production for bone china.
- Silica: High-quality quartzite close to Port Elizabeth that can be mined for silica, for potential use in Ferro-Silicon manufacture at Coega.
- Stone quarrying: Black granite (dolerite) at Willowvale for cladding and gravestones, and fresh water limestone (travertine) at Port St Johns for cladding and sculptures.
- Titanium: Possibility of a titanium smelter at one of the IDZs using sand from the Pondoland area of the Wild Coast.
