Metals and Engineering

The Eastern Cape metals and engineering industry has a strong base in Port Elizabeth and East London, centred on the automotive industry. Both the Coega and East London IDZs have opportunities to develop downstream metals and engineering industries, based on strong growth in the auto trade and in exports, but also with opportunities in machine tools and industrial machinery.

SOME OPPORTUNITIES:

• Copper bio-leaching: Feasibility and cost comparison to relocate to Eastern Cape.
• Downstream aluminium products: High potential in Coega IDZ.
• Industrial machinery: Production for growth industries in the longer term: Packaging, textiles, food processing, construction.
• Integrated stainless steel plant: Feasibility study underway. Cold rolled steel followed by Ferro-Nickel & Ferro-Chrome plants.
• Machine tools: Manufacture higher value machine tools for local sale and export.
• Marine repair and engineering: Production of small boats and leisure craft. Possible expansion of East London dry dock.
