Posted on: Thursday, 26 February 2004. Article source: Nelson Mandela Metropole
A site adjacent to the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) has been selected for a proposed stadium which will be home to the city’s new professional team and which will be used for the World Soccer Games in 2010, if South Africa is successful in its bid.
Designed by Sinani Consulting Engineers, the choice of site was motivated by the desire to be “near the formerly disadvantaged residents of the Ibhayi townships. It is also intended that it will add “huge economic benefits, including employment, to people of Motherwell.
The design of the stadium complies with all Fifa requirements and standards. Construction will begin once the decision once the host African nation for 2010 World Cup has been made. It is due to be completed by June 2007.
The SA Football Association has already approved the plans and a land-availability agreement has been signed with the metro.
In addition, two township stadiums, the Chevrolet and New Brighton stadiums, will also get a R1,7 million upgrade.
