PE experiencing unprecedented boom

The Coega development, while significant in its own right, has acted as a catalyst for Port Elizabeth’s growth, which not too long ago was known as the ghost on the coast.
Several other major investments are in the pipeline and highlight the economic boom which Port Elizabeth is experiencing. It also reflects the confidence of the city’s investors and residents. The list includes, amongst others:
* The construction of a possible ferronickel smelter at Coega by Mintek;
* The upgrade of the railway line between Coega and Sishen for the export of iron ore through the port to China;
* The construction of a steel mill flowing from the offset from the defence procurement package;
* The development of a unique waterfront;
* Erection of the Freedom Statue;
* The establishment of an international conference centre;
* Rehabilitation of the CBD;
* The extension of the botanical gardens into the waterfront and the heart of the city;
* Investigating alternatives for the north-south freeway; cost of its demolition is estimated at R90 million;
* The relocation of the railway station and possible extension of the Apple Express line, both to the airport and the beachfront;
* Expanding Bayworld to the tune of R200 million;
* Building a new soccer stadium; and
* Other developments in terms of the Uitenhage-Dispatch initiative that are up and running and at Colchester.
