E Cape Auto manufacturers lead the field
Posted on: Friday, 11 July 2003. Article source: Eastern Cape Business News
EASTERN CAPE vehicle assemblers dominated three of the four new vehicle categories during June 2003. Volkswagen South Africa’s newly-launched Polo Classic helped drive the company to pole position in June sales. The company sold 4812 new passenger cars, or nearly 500 more than its closest rival, Toyota. Volkswagen South Africa says it sold 1 433 Polos during June. This was during a month when overall passenger car sales were nearly five per cent higher than June last year. Total new vehicle sales were nearly six per cent up June 2002. The Eastern Cape accounted for 37 per cent of all new vehicles sold in South Africa during June, and 43 per cent of new cars. DaimlerChrysler in East London led the medium and heavy commercial vehicle sectors. This means that the only sector in which an Eastern Cape manufacturer was not in the lead was light commercials. The province accounted for 27 per cent of that market.
