R1,5 million funding to boost flower nursery
Posted on: Thursday, 16 March 2006. Article source: The Herald
A cut flower production project in Thornhill has been given a R1,5-million boost by the provincial agriculture department to continue its work within the Cacadu district community.
In operation since 2004, the Longmore Flower Estate project has been creating jobs within its surrounding communities, as well as raking in awards and accreditations, including the internationally recognised EuroGap accreditation.
The cut-flower nursery includes a packing shed and cooling facilities, storerooms, and a 30ha protea production area.
It is now expanding its existing nursery, clearing an additional 10ha of land and adding an additional nursery, backed by R1,5-million in funding from the provincial government, with a commitment for further financial assistance in the future.
With additional funding from the department of economic affairs and tourism, Eskom and the Development Bank, total funding for the project amounts to some R3,2-million.
The new developments were announced at an official function in Thornhill on Monday. It was attended by Premier Nosimo Balindlela and Agriculture MEC Gugile Nkwinti.
A tractor was donated by the MEC, for what he said he hoped would be a sustained project.
“We’ve hosted this expansion programme and it is one of the first mainly BEE-orientated projects around,” said provincial agriculture department spokesman Zoleka Dondolo.
