Bay is country’s 2nd cleanest city
Posted on: Thursday, 24 November 2005. Article source: The Herald
Nelson Mandela Bay was named the second cleanest city in South Africa last night, coming after eThekwini (Durban) and ahead of Cape Town.
The competition, which is held annually, is presented by South Africa’s department of national environmental affairs and tourism. The Bay was placed first in 2002, and third in 2003 and 2004.
Mandela Bay’s head of environmental affairs, councillor Melvin Manentsa, said it was an honour to accept the accolade.
Manentsa attributed the success to the integrated approach to environmental concerns within the city.
He highlighted projects such as housing and infrastructure which ensured that consideration was given to environmental aspects.
“We must also acknowledge environmental and beautification projects, the job creation and cleansing and recycling projects as well as the numerous educational awareness programmes that form part of the integrated development plan,” Manentsa said.
He hailed eThekwini on their success.
