It’s all about selling a business environment says the ELIDZ
Posted on: Thursday, 24 November 2005. Article source: Daily Dispatch
The concept of industrial zone development was all about selling a sound business environment.
The concept was relatively new to South Africa ... "but we are finding our feet and learning as we go".
This on Friday night was the crux of a message from the chief executive officer of the East London IDZ Corporation (ELIDZ), Simphiwe Kondlo, speaking at his organisation's well-attended Stakeholders' Awards Evening at Mercedes-Benz Park.
Describing 2005 as a definitive year for the ELIDZ, Kondlo said the project would not have got off the ground without the critical support of all three tiers of government in helping to establish a destination well serviced in terms of vital infrastructure.
"We have it all in place ... we have land strategically located and well serviced in terms of vital infrastructure ... the port, airport ... a good roads network ... rail-links and on site all the wherewithal which an investor and developer would require. And we can compete in terms of attractive incentives," said the CEO.
He described 2005 as a watershed year during which four investors ploughed over R300 million into the IDZ.
Giving recognition to contractors and staff for achievements in the technical field, for safety, health and the environment as well as business development, Kondlo said the successes of the ELIDZ was the project's greatest advertisement.
Technical awards went to: Express Builders, Ninham Shand Consortium and CRW Creative Welding.
In the category for Safety, Health and Environment: Mpumalanga Construction and Malangeni Electrical took the top honours, while the Business Development Award went to Intengu Communications as the most customer oriented consultant.
Boom Town Advertising received the award for most innovative supplier.
The CEO's awards recognised the contributions of: Wayne Jansen of KPMG; Aloe Travel; 19th Hole Executive Express; Terry Taylor of the National Ports Authority; Les Holbrook, CEO of the Border-Kei Chamber of Business; and Peter Miles, who was honoured with the ELIDZ Founder's Award.
