The interest in properties owned or administered by the Eastern Cape Development Corporation was described by acting ECDC chief executive Kevin Wakeford as a "property frenzy".

"We have had interest from almost every quarter in all kinds of property - not only tourist but industrial, office and residential as well," Wakeford said.

The interest was sparked by the ECDC's announcement last month that it needed to give priority to compiling a property asset register and to try and dispose of the corporation's unnecessary properties.

"We are in the business of promoting investment, we are not landlords," he said at an ECDC roadshow last month.

"The interest has been surprising - it is nothing short of a frenzy," Wakeford said.

He said high level of interest was a sign that there was a shortage of property in the region right across the spectrum.

He said the ECDC was speaking to the people showing interest but would only entertain offers once there was a register of assets, which he said was a priority.
