Two PE parts firms a credit to industry
Posted on: Thursday, 10 February 2005. Article source: The Herald
The SABS accreditation of two Port Elizabeth companies demonstrates the desire of manufacturing concerns to meet international standards.
The two companies – Wendon Springs and Wire Forming in Bethelsdorp and Fischer Profile in Perseverance – represent extremes in industries supplying components to the Eastern Cape automotive market.
Wendon Springs is a manufacturing concern with 15 staff members, while Fischer Profile is a recognised design and manufacturing business employing more than 100 staff.
But both companies have realised the value in improving their manufacturing systems and processes to meet international standards.
Wendon Springs qualified for the SABS ISO 9001:2002 quality systems certificate, which was handed over recently.
Operational since 2001, it is the first northern areas company to be awarded this highly sought-after accreditation.
The company manufactures springs and wire products for industries ranging from automotive manufacturing through to textile makers.
Managing director and founder Desmond May said the recognition would go a long way to propelling the company into the forefront in the industry.
He said the company was looking to increase its exposure to the automotive industry, to which it supplies seating and headrest springs. A recent development in this area was acceptance by General Motors of its products for headrest production.
SABS global conformity services divisional director Clarence King said the certification was a major achievement for the company.
Fischer Profile, by contrast, has recently confirmed a contract from Nissan Japan to supply all Nissan bakkies in South Africa with Fischer-designed and -developed seat slides. This is reportedly the first such exclusive order to be placed with a company outside Japan.
“The same order has been placed with us for the Ford double-cab being built in SA,” said CEO Heinz Fischer.
Established in 1979, the company supplies the major motor manufacturers with seat and guide rails, and was awarded the motor industry-specific ISO TS 16949:2002 certification.
“By the middle of this year, all Ford and Nissan bakkies being built in SA, and some of those models earmarked for export, will be equipped with our SA-developed seat slides,“ said Fischer.
