Bushman Sands nominated for international travel award

PE's internationally renowed tourism and boutique property group has been nominated in 10 categories in this year's World Travel Awards.
The Mantis Collection's latest property, Bushman Sands, has also been nominated for the world's leading Responsible Tourism award. Other nominations from the group include Shamwari game reserve in the Eastern Cape which stands to win four awards, the Saxon hotel in Johannesburg has been nominated for three awards, and the Steenberg in Cape Town.
The awards evening will take place in Barbados on 11 December 2004.
Researchers scoop top honours in competition

Two PE Technikon academics, Ben Zeelie and Ernst Ferg, and the University of Port Elizabeth’s professor Janet Wesson were three of National Research Foundation’s 10 winners.
The National Research Foundation contest was open to projects which received funding last year and contributed towards improving the competitiveness of South African industry.
Prof Zeelie’s project comprised developing and evaluating novel chemical production technologies for downstream chemical products, while Dr Ferg is working with the Port Elizabeth lead-acid battery industry to improve manufacturing and develop new battery types.
Prof Wesson’s project involves developing data visualisation software tools to help manage large networks more effectively and efficiently.
EL’s Ntsiki Pakade an EC emerging tourism finalist

Ntsiki Pakade, owner of four guest houses in the province, has been selected as the Eastern Cape Entrepreneur of the Year in the emerging tourism category.
Pakade said her ambition to become involved in the hospitality business stems from discussions she and her husband had about owning a B&B before they were even married.
Pakade was a second runner-up last year for the same award. She travels to London next month where all the provincial winners will be judged at the World Travel Markets event.
Goko now Herald and Weekend Post editor

Jethro Goko, editor of the Weekend Post and deputy editor of the Herald, replaced one of the longest serving editors in the country Rick Wilson as editor of the Herald. Wilson takes up a top management job. Goko was previously deputy editor of Business Day.
Woodridge’s Ball moves to SA’s oldest highest school

Woodridge College headmaster Ken Ball has been appointed as headmaster of the country’s oldest high school South African College School in Newlands, Cape Town from January. He will be succeeded by deputy headmaster Craig Neave.
Shoprite votes for EC with its cheque book

Shoprite, one of the country’s largest retail chain, confirmed its capital investment into new stores in the Nelson Mandela Metro. The company is to build two new supermarkets in Port Elizabeth. This will bring to seven the number of the stores which the group has in the area.
Depts hand over R1bn to Eastern Cape Treasury

Eastern Cape government departments have surrendered more than R1 billion to the provincial Treasury.
Finance MEC Billy Nel said that in the past weeks the Treasury had been consulting departments to encourage them to come up with cost-cutting measures.
By the beginning of October, all departments had "voluntarily" identified money totalling more than R1bn.
