ECDC SABS collaboration on ISO
Posted on: Wednesday, 30 April 2008. Article source: Eastern Cape Business News
There are various International Standards Organisation (ISO) courses which ECDC facilitates. These include ISO 9000 which relates to quality management systems, ISO 14001 which covers Environmental Management Systems, ISO 18000 that addresses Occupational Health and Safety Systems and finally, ISO 22000 which relates to Food Health and Safety Management Systems. SABS presents these quarterly.
“We have had an excellent response from small businesses to the training which benefits them on a number of levels. Firstly quality management systems like the ISO 9000 assist businesses to operate effectively and efficiently, which improves their overall profitability. It also enables small business to gain greater credibility with clients, notably public sector clients who are increasingly aware that companies that are certified as ISO compliant generally render a better quality service and product,” EDS head Belinda Vabaza said.
“We believe small business needs to be ISO accredited in their respective industries for a number of reasons. For many in order to be a supplier they need to comply with the standards specific to their industry and this indicates responsible corporate citizenship.
“The SABS emphasizes that there is empirical evidence that indicates that companies that comply with ISO 9000 are more efficient and resources are used optimally,” she said.
Any company wanting to export will access overseas markets more easily if they are ISO accredited.
“It is very rewarding to witness how the course impacts on attendees,” ECDC’s Vuyokazi Zozi said. “Initially some are not completely sure what the course involves and as it becomes clearer, and particularly as the individual benefits to their own business become clearer, the importance of ISO compliance becomes evident.”
The economic benefits of the ISO training programme include streamlined business processes, improved access to markets, improved understanding of standards, their application and auditing, reduced mortality rate of small business, improved quality of products or service offerings and trainees are empowered to identify hazards and risks and develop a quality manual for their respective businesses.
Courses are advertised in advance however if you would like more information contact ECDC’s Enterprise Development Services Unit on 043 704 5600.
