THE National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) is to receive R1,8-million in sponsorship from Airports Company SA (Acsa) for the coastal airports of Port Elizabeth, Durban, East London, George and Cape Town.
The NSRI has a fleet of 57 rescue boats stationed at 29 coastal and three inland stations that are operated by 700 highly skilled volunteer crew members.
“International aviation law recommends that all coastal airports within a 10km radius of the coast, have a sea rescue service. We have the greatest respect for the NSRI who undertake to perform this service as a social obligation.
“Acsa has been an NSRI Platinum Partner for many years contributing to its head office running costs,” said general manager Durban international and national airports, Deon Cloete.
He said Acsa will continue to work closely with the NSRI teams in terms of training and hosting of emergency drills to ensure its readiness to perform should the need arise.
