Posted on: Friday, 31 May 2002. Article source: Eastern Cape Business News
THE COEGA Development Corporation has invited tenders for the construction of 520 dwelling units to house construction workers engaged on the development of the project. The tender notice calls for the building of various facilities in the construction village, situated near the Well’s Estate housing development. The facilities include:
Approximately 520 dwelling units in three different configurations, single, duplex and 3-storey walk-up units; A business centre; Administration building; Dining facility; and recreational amenities. The 3-storey walk-up units will consist of six 2-bedroomed units, 2 per floor, with a floor area of approximately 350m˛ per block, and 19 such blocks are planned. “It is anticipated that thousands of people will be employed on various construction sites within the IDZ over the next five years. Although the majority of construction workers will be employed from within the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan area, the CDC must provide facilities for itinerant skilled personnel, as this is the nature of the construction industry,” says CDC executive manager for communications Raymond Hartle. “The facilities are being planned in association with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality, the Eastern Cape Government and the National Housing Finance Corporation. “It is intended that when the facilities are no longer required for the IDZ, the dwelling units will be incorporated into the available housing stock in the area. “To that end, we are in discussion with various housing associations regarding the future use and management of the housing stock.”
