Inkwenkwezi game park expanding

MORE GAME and accommodation are to be added to the Inkwenkwezi private game park near East London. Park owner Graham Stanton says the park's existing accommodation, comprising two tented camps of six units each, has been running at almost full capacity since its official launch in December 2001. To this is being added dormitory-style accommodation for 24 hikers. There are now plans to build a luxury camp around a hippo pool. Stanton says he has been working for the past 16 years to make Inkwenkwezi "the overnight sensation" that it has become since it opened its gates to the public less than two years ago. "I have lived with the idea of building a conservancy in this area for a long time and have been steadily working towards the goal of re-introducing animals to the region that were here up until the late 19th century, like lion and elephant, and of course the buffalo after which the city is now named." Inkwenkwezi has been established as a 40000 hectare park. Another 16000ha is ready to be incorporated. Nine of the farm homesteads are to be converted to self-catering accommodation, which should be ready well before this year's December holiday season, says Stanton. The objective is for Inkwenkwezi to cater for all budgets. "The hikers' accommodation should be able to offer trips to school groups and also to tie in with The Strandloper Trail or the Wild Coast Meander or Amble. "Once they have done a walk along the coast they can then spend some time in the wild with game, as another part of their holiday." The Hippo Camp will be more upmarket than the existing tented camps, but will be a step down from a proposed super luxury camp. ''This super luxury camp will be in a separate part of the reserve and will have its own recreation and dining area, a swimming pool and the suites will have absolutely everything including underfloor heating." He said the hippo would only be introduced to the Hippo Camp once the building work had been completed. "It is almost impossible to do any building around hippo," Stanton said adding that the sleeping units will be placed right at the water's edge. Each of Inkwenkwezi's accommodation sections, with the exception of the hikers' unit, only caters for 12 people. "This is because we don't want to make any busy roads in the park and 12 people can be taken around in comfort in two vehicles." Each of the tented camps has its own recreation and dining area.
