Posted on: Friday, 22 March 2002. Article source: Eastern Cape Business News
THE EASTERN CAPE represents 11.5 per cent of the national market for goods and services, according to the University of South Africa’s Bureau for Market Research (BMR). According to the BMR, this is only marginally lower than the next-highest 12.5 per cent share offered by the Western Cape. The highest share – 28.7 per cent – is in Gauteng, followed by KwaZulu/Natal. Port Elizabeth, the largest city in the Eastern Cape, accounts for 2.2 per cent of the total national market. This is the fifth-highest – behind Pretoria (4.3 per cent), Johannesburg (3.9 per cent), Durban (2.6 per cent) and Randburg (2.5 per cent). The Eastern Cape, which supplies over 40 per cent of the new cars sold in South Africa, accounted for 5.1 per cent of national sales. The BMR figures are calculated using the residential population, day population and personal disposable income.
