TWO OF Southern Africa’s top ten golf courses are in the Eastern Cape, according to the Getaway guide on the iAfrica.com website. The courses, as listed in the guide are: “Wild Coast Sun: Some 90 minutes' drive south of Durban you'll find this hotel resort with 400 rooms, each overlooking one of the country's finest golf courses or the ocean. The challenging par-70 course winds spectacularly through ravines, sub-tropical bush and around dams. there are also water sports, beach walks and a large casino to take your mind off your swing; and Humewood, Port Elizabeth, South Africa: Coastal bush, sand dunes, humps, hollows and wind characterise this seaside links outside The Friendly City. Watch out, though, for dive bombing crowned plovers protecting their nests,” says the site. The province also boasts one of the top ten country pubs in Southern Africa – the Pig and Whistle Hotel in Bathhurst: “It claims to be the oldest inn in South Africa and has been declared a national monument. The Pig is certainly a local institution, with its wood–panelled lounge, winter fire and hearty, reasonably priced food. The hotel offers comfortable, reasonably priced accommodation,” it says.
