Surf and sand are tops in Eastern Cape
Posted on: Friday, 27 December 2002. Article source: Eastern Cape Business News
THREE OF THE TOP ten surfing and sand boarding sites in Southern Africa can be found in the Eastern Cape. That’s according to the Getaway Top Ten lists published on the web site iAfrica.com. The website lists the following sites in its top ten surfing spots: “Bruce’s Beauties, Cape St Francis, South Africa: Bruce’s Beauties (the waves that featured in the 1960s classic The Endless Summer) form an exceptional right-point break. Unfortunately, they don’t work very often but they’re worth waiting for; Supertubes, Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa: When the spot known as Supertubes is working - usually with a big south swell and a light west wind - stand by for the best-formed waves on the coast; Nahoon Reef, near East London, South Africa: Ask a surfing expert to name the most consistent Big Wave spot along the South African coast and chances are that Nahoon Reef will come out near the top. The best sand-boarding sites are listed as: Alexandria, South Africa: The area between the Eastern Cape town of Alexandria and the sea consists of a huge expanse of pale-yellow sand and occasional pockets of vegetation. Some long, impressive-looking dunes have steep lee slopes. If you are lucky, you may see a bushbuck lurking in the scrub; Maitland River Mouth, South Africa: Local sandboarders (and out-of-towners) love this spot on the edge of the Maitland Nature Reserve - about 30km from Port Elizabeth. A beautiful indigenous forest in the reserve adds to the attraction. Regular trips to the dunes are run from town; Port Alfred, South Africa: To the west of the pier, the beach and its wide range of dunes carries on further than the eye can see. The dunes are not very long, but because they're steep, they guarantee a fast ride.”
