THE EASTERN Cape’s Volkswagen South Africa reported record sales for August 2002.
Volkswagen South Africa sales and marketing Director Jolyon Nash said the sale of 4 987 units - 3 365 Volkswagen and 622 Audis - was the largest number for 2002 by the country's leading passenger vehicle manufacturer. “The strong sale of all our volume models including the Citi Golf (1 230), Golf 4 and Jetta 4 (1 347) and the Polo Classic and Playa (1 643) has enabled us to continue the market leadership in the passenger sector that we have enjoyed since the last quarter of 2000," said Nash. “This has given us a market share of 24,6 per cent for the month for an overall share of 22,7 per cent year to date.” These sales were achieved in a buoyant South African passenger car market, with sales of 20 339 units taking place during the month. The overall market in August was 1.3 per cent up on the August market in 2001. Eastern Cape manufacturers – VWSA, DaimlerChrysler and Delta accounted for over 40 per cent of all new car sales during the month. Sales of medium commercial vehicles continued their strong growth in August, said Ian Nicholls, Delta’s director of sales and marketing. “The overall market was encouraging, with the August performance generally in line with our expectations”, says Nicholls. “Although sales of Heavy Commercials showed a slight slow down, the outlook for the balance of the year remains positive.”
