Eastern Cape engines prove themselves on economy run

FORD CARS powered by RoCam engines made in Port Elizabeth have come top in their classes in the 26th annual Total Economy Run. In Class B, for vehicles with engines between 1 151 and 1 400 cc, Collin Burford and Wynand Gerber piloted their Lazarus Motorsport Ford Fiesta to a commanding class win, recording a fuel consumption figure of 5.75 litres/100 km. Team-mates Harry Young and Gordon Stewart in a Ford Ikon, took second place with 5,98 litres/100 km. Both vehicles are powered by 1.3 litre RoCam engines. Motorsport legend Spotti Woodhead, partnered and navigator Greg Pridgeon, took the Class C honours for cars with engines between 1 401 and 1 600 cc. Their Lazarus Motorsport Ford Ikon with a 1.6 litre RoCam engine recorded 5.70 litres/100 km. The 26th Total Economy Run saw the 57 entrants completing a tough route of some 710 kilometres on day one, with a further 340 km covered on day two. Held mostly on tar, with only approximately 50 km on gravel, the route embraced several of the country’s most challenging mountain passes, including Helshoogte near Barberton, Botha's Nek, Schoemanskloof, Schaapwagters Pass, Chomsieshoogte Pass, Watervalrivier Pass, Robbers Pass, Bonnet, Bergvliet, Koewyn Pass and the Long Tom Pass.
