Local BEE company signs deal with shipping giant
Posted on: Thursday, 23 September 2004. Article source: Daily Dispatch
Local black economic empowerment group Ikhwezi Holdings has signed a joint venture agreement with the German giant, Bremen Lagerhaus Gesellschaft (BLG) Logistics.
BLG Logistics, an international leader in the shipping world, employs 6500 people and last year recorded sales of over R5bn.
The company specialises in automobile, contract and container logistics and handled a total of 3,22 million vehicles worldwide last year.
Its European network, with nine sea and inland terminals, is supplemented by shipments via rail, road and water.
The agreement has been described by Ikhwezi director Willy Gauss as another step for the city on the globalisation trail.
The deal between Ikhwezi and BLG is the result of meetings between Gauss and fellow directors Kalipile Mabentsela and Pieter Bosch, with BLG board members 18 months ago.
As a follow up to the meetings BLG subsidiary, BLL Lead Logistics, opened an office in Port Elizabeth a year ago.
Yesterday directors for the newly established BEE company, BLL Ikhwezi Logistics, signed the joint venture agreement here.
Bosch said the focus of the company would be to target logistics opportunities in the South African market with specific emphasis within the automotive industry.
Through its network BLG customers in the finished vehicle and high and heavy sector are offered a complete range of logistics services. These services are provided at over 20 overseas locations for customers such as DaimlerChrysler, Volkswagen, Konica Minolta, Siemens and others.
Although the newly formed company will have its base in Port Elizabeth, its shareholding will have a strong local presence.
The directors are Lynette Hadley, who has been appointed managing director, Frank Dybianka, who heads BLL in South Africa, Shane Gerber, Thandiwe Godongwana and Nelson Ndinisa, who is currently managing director of Masakhane Security.
Godongwana, the wife of former Finance MEC Enoch Godongwana, and Ndinisa are also directors of Ikhwezi Holdings.
The holding company has recently embarked on its newest project, the Ikhwezi Neuro Clinic, a 60-bed psychiatric and drug and alcohol abuse rehabilitation centre, which is now under construction.
