Mandela Bay Development Agency agency gets started

Pierre Voges, former state president’s office senior official and more recently, an executive of Grant Thornton International, has been appointed as CEO of the metro’s development agency. The MBDA is a special purpose development body, established by the municipality, with the support of the IDC and the DBSA, to project manage regeneration of the PE inner city with a view to promoting economic and tourism development.
EL gets new harbour master

Captain Dennis Mqadi is East London’s new harbour master. His predecessor Captain Rufus Lekala has been transferred to Cape Town.
New Rhodes chair

South African Breweries is to sponsor a new chair of media and democracy at Rhodes University at cost of R3 million over five years. The company believes the chair “will act as a strategic intervention in the efforts to rebuild our continent”. Rhodes journalism department head Guy Berger said it would “service to develop intellectual expertise on the issues of media and democracy”. It would provide a substantial and indepth study of the media’s role in African democracy and good political and economic governance.
GBS appoints firsts to its board

Grahamstown’s GBS Mutual Bank has appointed its first ever black person and woman to the board. They are advocate Gerald Bloem and local businesswoman Kerryn Wiblin.

Professor Jay O’Keeffe, director of the Institute for Water Research at Rhodes University was awarded the gold medal of the Southern African Society of Aquatic Scientists for his outstanding contribution in the field of research and management development in the aquatic sciences in southern Africa.
Coega terminal talks called off, says Erwin

Talks between the National Ports Authority and Codeco – a consortium that includes P&O Nedlloyd – over the development of a container terminal and logistics park at Coega, have been called off.
Cacadu to move to J-Bay

The Cacadu District Municipality will move its headquarters from Port Elizabeth to Jeffreys Bay next year, and not to Grahamstown as originally planned. This was after objections were raised that the move to Grahamstown would be too costly and inconvenience employees. The move to Jeffreys Bay is expected to cost R15 million.
