Coega harbour soon to fly welcome flag

The Coega harbour, which has been under construction since 2002, will be flooded next month and the first ship is due to dock in the harbour at the end of July.

Sabco goes East in search of new markets

Port Elizabeth-based Coca-Cola Sabco appetite for Eastern markets has been appeased with the signing of an agreement with its US counterpart to acquire plants in Cambodia and Laos. Sabco’s existing operations in this region include Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Sabco estimates that the consumers in these markets total 220 million.

SA companies almost tops

South African manufacturing companies are keeping abreast with the best practices in the world says leading international business pioneer Richard Schonberger. He believes that SA manufacturing companies rate second out of nine regions in the world. This was after conducting research among 31 competitors recently. He warned, however, of new competitors such as China and Russia, and said that SA should not become complacent. Training in the latest techniques and improving infrastructure could help SA retain its competitive edge.

EH Walton goes big on BEE

Port Elizabeth-based packaging company EH Walton, which has injected more than R70 million into its current infrastructure, is about to embark on an innovative black empowerment initiative. It is to allocate more than a quarter of its shareholding to a black economic empowerment trust whose members are the company’s 450 employees.
EH Walton was established about 160 years ago and is privately owned.

Cigarette plant in East London

Caroline Tobacco of the United States has established an operation in East London which will manufacture and export cigarettes to the USA. The R100 million investment will result in exports of nearly 500 million cigarettes monthly. Five cigarette making and packaging machines will be operational and 100 direct jobs have been created. The local business will be managed on behalf of Carolina Tobacco by newly formed African American Tobacco. The project would also have major implications for the port of East London which would handle all imports of raw materials and exports of the finished products.

CPR comes up trumps with Creative Impact

Creative Public Relations, the oldest public relations firm in the Border region, is to restructure which will result in a black majority shareholding. The new company is to be known as Creative Impact. The black shareholder will be Tozi Faba of Empowerment Networking Enterprise. Faba is a prominent businessman and communications expert and a former chief director of communications in the Eastern Cape Premier’s office. The new arrangement will introduce over 50 per cent black equity shareholding to the company.

Queenstown’s Frederick is one of SA’s brightest

Frederick van der Vyver of Queenstown is the town’s representative in this year’s Brightest Young Minds (BYM) conference which is due to held in Cape Town from 28 June to 2 July. Van der Vyver, an actuarial science student at the University of Stellenbosch, is one of only 100 students chosen from 14 universities in South Africa. They were chosen on a combination of academic excellence and leadership qualities, and were according to the organisers “people who showed passion about our country and who ‘think out of the box’”.

From wildlife to wild fun at Kirkwood Wildlife Festival
The picturesque farming town of Kirkwood in the Sunday’s River Valley is celebrating its status as the new wildlife and conservation capital of Africa with the third annual Kirkwood Wildlife Festival. Running from June 25 to 27, the festival has been built around one of South Africa’s premier game auctions. The auction attracts buyers from all over southern Africa as it is one of the few opportunities of obtaining premium quality game from the Addo Elephant National Park and private reserves such as the Riverbend Lodge, which operates a concession within the Greater Addo Elephant National Park.
