Grahamstown festival gets underway in July
The 30th Grahamstown Arts Festival will held from 1 to 10 July this year.
The 2003 study undertaken by the Department of Economics and Economic History at Rhodes University, indicated that an estimated R33 million is generated by the festival. Another encouraging finding revealed a marked increase in African visitors. Most festival goers come from South Africa with a small international contingent attending from Zimbabwe, the USA, England, Botswana and France. Almost 65% of the 42 businesses interviewed said that they reported increases in their monthly income.

Grahamstown SciFest scoops award

The Sasol SciFest, which is held in Grahamstown in March each year, has scooped a prestigious award at the sixth National National Science and Technology Forum. The SciFest won in the category of not-for-profit organisations, for its “significant contribution to science, engineering and technology” over the past three years.
PE school team wins JSE Schools challenge

The Lawson Brown JSE team took first place in a competition based on the business of SA’s stock exchange, beating 320 schools nationally. Teams were given R1 million to invest by buying and selling shares. The PE team made a 20 per cent profit. The team hopes to win the overall challenge which is due to be announced in September.
Selborne College’s Andrew Liddle beats 700 entrepreneurs

Selborne College matriculant Andrew Liddle is one of the five national finalists in the Absa Top Entreprenurs competition. The 17-year-old produced biltong slicers, clocks and bonsai turntables from his woodwork business. He is the only finalist from the Eastern Cape and beat 700 other entries.
GMSA now to handle Saab

GMSA has been granted the distribution rights for Saab vehicles in SA. GMSA president Robert Socia says that “we are confident of the future of the Saab brand in the country.”
EC woman is new envoy to Singapore

Former MPL and provincial chairperson of the ANC Women’s League Zanele Makina has been appointed South Africa’s high commissioner to Singapore. She said that her role would be find partners for South Africa and the Eastern Cape. The former teacher was the only women in the Public Service Commission that rationalised the province between 1994 and 1999. She also served as chairperson of the Bisho Legislature safety and security standing committee.
Kingswood head appointed

Derek Braans has been appointed principal of Kingswood Junior School. The appointment is effective from 1 September 2004. He is currently principal of Theodor Herzl Primary School in Port Elizabeth.
