R800 million German investment for EC
Posted on: Friday, 11 June 2004. Article source: Daily Dispatch
The first stage of a R800 million project, which aims to process 600 000 litres of milk and other drinks, is almost complete said Nyika Investments chairperson Bengati Kapowo on his return from Germany earlier this month.
The two plants, which will be used for production of milk as well as fruit and sweet drinks, are expected to be built on the Bilatye, Qamata and Ncora irrigation schemes along the R61 between Queenstown and Cofimvaba in the Chris Hani Municipality.
Kapowo, who was accompanied by Chris Hani District Municipality mayor Mafuza Sigabi. the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) and HMS Capital, said that “the visit resulted in the finalisation of contractual agreements of unique flavours and recipes, revolutionary to the South Africa palate," he said.
Kapowo said Nyika, together with promoters HMS Capital and technical partners ProTec AG - an engineering group in Germany - has been contracted to construct the processing facilities.
He added that, in addition to milk processing, the factory would also produce powdered milk, yoghurt, cheese and evaporated milk products - all designed in compliance with European Union standards.
Goods will be produced for both local consumption and the export market.
He said the Chris Hani Municipality and its surrounds had been identified as the prime location for plant, as well as for the supply of raw produce for the plant.
"This initiative is expected to create jobs for construction workers when the plant is constructed on the 55 hectares of land. Thereafter the processing plant will provide work for an estimated 600 employees.”
Kapowo said the project had the full support of the German government, the German Chamber of Commerce and the German Farmers' Association.
He said the Germans had undertaken to provide specially bred high daily yield milk-producing cows to previously disadvantaged communities in the municipality, so they could build up their herds for the plant's milk production.
An accredited training college would be established to train farmers and potential farmers.
