The Nelson Mandela Metro aims to be the venue for a 2010 Soccer World Cup semi-final – and host a major team like Brazil.
Discussions between the metro, the provincial government, soccer stakeholders and the private sector had already started. A steering committee will study the bid book which is being set up to ensure the city delivers on each and every consideration of the cup.
Mayor Faku says Port Elizabeth is one of the “prettiest” cities in the country and coupled with “the necessary infrastructure, then it would a more than ideal venue for a semi-final”.
He says in terms of the culture, lifestyle and comfort, the city would be the most suitable “home” for the Brazilians.
“It was well-noted during the Cricket World Cup in 2003 that we were one of the best host cities. In addition, our city already has ties with cities in Brazil, having hosted and visited the city of Sao Paulo, among others.”
Fifa policies require a 60 000-seater stadium for the hosting of a semi-final, according to the Safa 2010 bid committee.
