Metals

The Eastern Cape metals and engineering sector is primarily centred around the provincial automotive industry in Port Elizabeth and East London.  However, the two provincial industrial development zones are providing direct and indirect opportunities focused on engineering and metal-related industries.  Opportunities in the metals and engineering sectors of the Eastern Cape, specifically within the IDZ's, are limited given the fact that the province has no ready access to metal raw materials:

  • Machine tools - opportunities exist for business development and investment in the manufacture of high-value machine tools for both the domestic and international market.

National government is in the process of finalising their metals sector strategy for the country.  This strategy, once finalised and implemented, will provide significant direction and opportunity identification for the metals and engineering industry in both the country and the Eastern Cape.
