Forestry and Wood Products

The Eastern Cape is the only province in South Africa where forestry can be expanded – another 100000 hectares is suitable for commercial forestry plantations. The three-year goal of the province is to:
  • Develop 30,000 hectares of new plantations.
  • Rehabilitate 10,000 hectares of existing state plantations.
  • Establish downstream wood processing facilities at Mthatha.
In keeping with its diverse climate and vegetation, the Eastern Cape has major areas of land under both commercial forestry plantations (170,000 hectares) and indigenous natural forest (130,000 hectares). The province has the third largest area under commercial plantation after Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, with great potential for expansion. The province is the only area in South Africa where plantations can be significantly expanded under the forestry permit system.

National government has approved the 10- to 15-year Forestry and Timber Expansion Project that aims to develop 100,000 hectares of new forests in the east of the province. Here, the towns of Ugie and Maclear are already benefiting from the establishment of a R1.3-billion Steinhoff particle board plant. Provincial government has provided additional funding for bulk public infrastructure and power supply to anchor the investment, and housing, hotel, estate living and commercial developments are underway.

SOME OPPORTUNITIES:
  • Building joinery: Black owned saw-millers can diversify into doors, frames, flooring, planks, mostly in pine. Export potential.
  • Charcoal: Small wattle plantations can be used to produce high quality charcoal. Can develop from the ‘Working for Water’ campaign
  • Community forestry: Transfer small plantations to community trusts to form community public private partnerships with sawmills and other wood processing companies.
  • Improved wood quality: Training saw millers in wood processing, especially pine.
  • Increase forestry area: The Eastern Cape is the only province that can increase its forestry area. An estimated 120 000 hectares can be planted, mostly in the former Transkei.
  • Indigenous plantations: Small plantations of indigenous hardwood (yellowwood, blackwood) can be harvested to a limited extent.
  • New hardwood plantations: Need for increased availability of eucalypts (saligna) and wattle.
  • Paper and pulp mill: Long-term potential for a paper and pulp mill at Mthatha once forestry area has expanded.
  • Treated poles: Potential for a plant in Butterworth. Uses in agriculture and transmission poles.
  • Wood-chipping plant: The East London IDZ can host an export wood-chipping plant, railing timber from Mthatha.
